About the Market
Located in Gibsons, British Columbia, The Fiddlehead Farmers’ Market is a market with a mission: To get more people on the Sunshine Coast to grow their own food. It’s that simple.
We are going to do that by making food gardening the thing to do! We’ll do it by making food gardening fun and social and profitable. We’ll do it by providing a place where people who know a thing or two about gardening or preserving or living rationally can teach those of us who want to learn more.
The spirit of the market revolves around the idea of taking a proactive approach to dealing with contemporary social and environmental problems. It’s about being actively ‘pro-community’ and not just ‘anti-sprawl’. It’s about being actively ‘pro-local’ rather than just being ‘anti-corporate’. It’s about getting off your butt and doing something tangible and productive rather than just talking about and analyzing and moralizing the problems of the day.
Who’s doing this and why?
The Fiddlehead Farmers’ market is an independent, not-for-profit community development project initiated by members of the Fresh Alternatives Society, a new organization based on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia.
The society’s goals are:
- to support and promote sustainable, organic agricultural practices - especially home-based gardening
- to increase food security on the Sunshine Coast
- to promote community health by distributing nutritious food
- to support and promote local production, distribution and consumption
- to support and provide a public forum for other non-profit groups working on issues related to food security and sustainable development
What will I find there?
All things grown and produced locally on the Sunshine Coast. We specialize in local produce, but you’ll also come across soaps and candles, jewelry and clothes, photos and paintings and a whole lot more. There is always live music by various local artists and many special events.
We also have a consignment table, where for a small percentage, you can drop off any extra produce from your garden or orchard and have our volunteers sell it for you. What a great way to give back to the community.
